Bioactive fillings are surface reactive glass-ceramic biomaterials and have interaction with biological tissues. Bioactive fillings have biocompatibility and bioactivity and thus have a high application as implant material in the human body to repair and replace diseased tissue. Bioactive fillings reacts with the biological tissues in two phases. In the first phase, alkali metal ions are leached from the glass and replaced with hydrogen ions and in the second phase, the Si-O-Si bonds in the silica matrix undergo hydrolysis, yielding a gel-like surface layer rich on Si-O-H groups. In the ultimate stage, calcium phosphate-rich layer forms over the surface of the filling, sealing any further leaching. Bioactive fillings, interact with the body, and have been used in orthopaedics for decades. Bioactive fillings are made from compounds such as silicon oxide, calcium oxide, and phosphorous oxide, and has antimicrobial effect due to the release of calcium and phosphate ions which have an antibacterial activity and also tend to neutralize the local acidic pH. Bioactive fillings prolong the life of fillings because their antibacterial effects and replacement of lost minerals.
