Also known as flesh-eating disease, necrotizing fasciitis is a rare bacterial infection affecting the tissue beneath the skin, surrounding muscles, and organs. The bacteria that is responsible for the disease releases toxins results into the damage nearby tissue. There are four major types for necrotizing fasciitis – type I known as polymicrobial infection, type II caused by haemolytic group A streptococcus, staphylococci such as methicillin resistant strains/MRSA, type III caused by bacterium such as clostridium, and others. It starts as a minor injury such as a small cut, but may get worst and can be life threatening if left untreated. Major risk factors for the disease are diabetes, cancer, obesity, intravenous drug use, alcoholism, and peripheral vascular disease.
